Interview with Teresa Yin, Fremont Asian American Chiropractor

Can you share what inspired you to become a chiropractor?

The ability to interact with patients on a personal level and be a part of their health journey from start to finish. I believed there would be a great need for more conservative care as people were becoming more sedentary in their jobs with computer use.

How does your chiropractic practice address both physical and mental health concerns in adults, particularly those struggling with anxiety or trauma?

I always say that 75% of my work is physical based and 25% is mental based. As we know, severe or chronic stress/anxiety/trauma can manifest into physical symptoms - some people more than others. People don't realize that their body heals better/faster when their mind is at ease too. We try our best to create a soothing, safe, and healing atmosphere in our office for those who need to escape from their daily lives.

What are some key principles or philosophies that guide your approach to chiropractic care for adults, especially when it comes to mental health support?

I try to be a neutral and objective listener, since most people feel comfortable knowing that it is a safe space to vent/dump their feelings and since they have already built a trusting relationship with me and my staff. We often spend quite a bit of time being active listeners as part of their visit, and we see that most everyone leaves in a much more positive mood.

How do physical health and mental health interconnect in adults, and what role do you play in balancing both through chiropractic care?

Mental stress translates into headaches, jaw clenching, muscle tension, poor sleep, lack of exercise, higher rates of depression/anxiety, fatigue, malnutrition, stress eating...which all contribute to the pain-spasm-pain cycle in the body over time. All of these elevate inflammatory processes in the body that can lead to more serious ailments over time, such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, etc. that can work against achieving a healthier lifestyle.

What type of patients do you find yourself most passionate about working with?

I am most eager to work with individuals who have made a commitment to themselves to better their condition. That could be the average person who is learning how to manage their back pain, someone recovering from a bad injury/accident, people learning how to stay/become healthier, to a competitive athlete who wants to perform better. My job is to empower and guide people on thier individual journeys.

What can new patients expect during their first appointment with you? Could you walk us through what a typical consultation or treatment session might look like?

The first appointment lasts about an hour. We will review your medical history and perform an exam on the body part in question. This involves some orthopedic tests, range of motion movements, and a hands-on exam to assess muscle/joint function. Treatment typically will include physiotherapy to prep the soft tissue (loosen tight muscles, improve circulation, flush out areas of inflammation, etc) and then stretching, myofascial release, and adjustments of the joints will follow. Lastly, we finish with home care instructions.

What do you wish people knew about how chiropractic care can help with mental health challenges?

For many people, dealing with chronic or recurring pain can be all consuming. When our bodies feel better, it allows us to evaluate what other areas of ourselves need attention. This gives people the capacity to focus on their mental health as well.
