Interview with Aya Sato, Fremont Child Therapist

What kind of therapy services do you provide?

My private practice in Fremont, Aya Sato Therapy, offers in-person play therapy to young children as early as infancy up to school aged children. My services include individual therapy, parent-child therapy, and parent consultation/coaching.

Do you provide therapy in Fremont? Do people only see you in office or do you provide online therapy in California?

I have a fully equipped playroom designed to support learning, development, and healing in Fremont. I see children and parents primarily in person, but telehealth appointments are an option (especially for parents) to accommodate family’s schedules.

What inspired you to provide therapy in Fremont?

My play therapist supervisor, Susan Kelsey, invited me to join her suite of play therapists in Fremont. I’ve felt embraced by the warm and welcoming neighborhood here after transitioning from SF to Fremont and appreciate the serene, culturally diverse, and inspirational community.

How does your therapy service help people with Trauma?

I work with developmental trauma, attachment trauma, and generational trauma that impacts young children and their caregivers and family systems. Through play therapy and working with the parent-child dyad, we co-create moments of relational safety, mutual delight, and connectedness. I embody emotional regulation and unconditional positive regard with using more play and less words and more connection and less correction, more delight and less shame and hurt.

How do you uniquely help Asian clients in therapy?

My cultural competence allows me to provide culturally sensitive care tailored to the unique needs of Asian American clients. Whether clients are navigating cultural identity, dealing with cross-cultural and/or immigration challenges, or seeking therapy that respects all cultural backgrounds and values, I’m here to help create a safe space to talk about what’s important to individuals. I have strong roots in the Asian Pacific Islander communities and love continuing to give back and connect to my population.

What kind of people do you love working with in therapy?

I love working with young children and witnessing their growth into their true selves. I cherish entering their creative, silly, fun worlds with their permission and trust, and building a bridge between children and their parents to foster connectedness and delight. I see the therapeutic powers of play emerge when children are given a magical space and time, free of judgment and evaluation, to be whoever they want to be in that moment.

What types of therapy do you specialize in?

I specialize in infant parent mental health, early childhood development, and play therapy and my goal is to support children and their parents foster development, relationships, attachment, connection, and healing together. I’m also working towards my Register Play Therapist (RPT) credentials so I am trained in and supervised by a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S) to support the work of therapy with young children and filial therapy with parents and their children.

How can people contact you to learn more about working with you as their therapist?
